Human rights defender Rita Mahato has been threatened with death, rape and kidnapping as a result of her work helping women in Nepal who have suffered acts of violence. She is a health adviser at the WomenÂ’s Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC). The police have failed to provide Rita Mahato with protection or to investigate the threats, and she fears for her life. Members of the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó in Colombia have been the focus of suspicion and hostility from all parties to the armed conflict since the Community’s formation in 1997. More than 170 have been killed since then, mostly at the hands of paramilitaries, either acting alone or with the collusion of the security forces. Guerrilla groups have also been responsible for a number of killings. Demolition crews, accompanied by security officials, may arrive at any time, giving families little notice or opportunity to remove their possessions.
