Climate change in a living landscape: Conceptual and methodological aspects of a vulnerability assessment in the Eastern Cordillera Real of Colombia Ecuador and Peru
This document is a translated summary of the original publication resulting from the initiative Cambio climtico en un paisaje vivo: Vulnerabilidad y adaptacin en la Cordillera Real Oriental de Colombia, Ecuador y Per (WWF y Fundacin Natura 2010). We have focused primarily on presenting the methodological aspects of the vulnerability analysis, providing information on Eastern Cordillera Real (ECR) to illustrate how we applied the Turner II et al. (2003) three-pronged framework for understanding vulnerability of a system to environmental change. The results of the combined vulnerability analyses (biological, hydrological and socioeconomic) for the ECR demonstrate the need for actions oriented at maintaining the continued provision of ecosystem services as well as the biological and cultural riches of the region. This work was done thanks to the support of WWF-UK and DFID.

WWF recommendations on the European Commission's Proposal for Horizon 2020
The 2014-2020 new research fund Horizon 2020 is of strategic importance for tackling the challenges facing Europe. Climate change, biodiversity loss, energy and resource inefficiency are part of these challenges and should be addressed by Horizon 2020 in a much more ambitious way that it has been done in the 2007-2013 research fund FP7. The following areas need to be strengthened:
  • Research for the benefit of society and environment
  • Tackle societal challenges
  • Increase the role of civil society in research
  • Move ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) out of the EU budget, including its likely overruns

Five years of PA4LP work in the Caucasus Ecoregion
From 2007 to 2011 Protected Areas for a Living Planet (PA4LP) project has enabled governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to come together to support the establishment of new PAs, the creation of management plans of existing PAs, the drafting of legislation and the coordination of efforts between countries on achieving CBD targets. The results of the 2011 review of implementation of the CBD’s Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) in the Caucasus Ecoregion are summarized in the specially produced brochure. PoWPA implementation was reviewed in five countries of the Caucasus Ecoregion - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Turkey. In these countries PA4LP supported strong national and regional level partnerships of donors, governments, scientists and civil society which assisted governments in delivering on CBD Protected Areas commitments. This partnership approach made a significant contribution to meeting CBD targets and strengthening of PA systems in the Caucasus. This five year project would not have been successful without good will and effective partnership between all stakeholders. But much remains to be done to strengthen PA systems in the region: the last chapter highlights key developments and defines future priorities to meet targets of the PoWPA as well as setting out further opportunities for partnerships. The brochure is produced under the auspicesof the Caucasus Biodiversity Council with the support of the PA4LP project - a collaboration of the Swiss-based MAVA Foundation and WWF.
